47. Werewolves do not exist

Nor do silver bullets.

There is not a single process, a single tool, or a single person who can magically solve the accumulated problems within an organization.

In the field of digital products, Software Engineering plays a significant role in designing, building, maintaining, and evolving a product.

Software Engineering is a stratified technology, or one with multiple layers.

To consistently solve problems, we need to establish 4 layers in the following order of importance:

  1. Quality focus
  2. Processes
  3. Techniques
  4. Tools

In other words, the quality focus (what is right and what is wrong for my organization or team) define the processes (how things are done in my organization or team), the processes require techniques (skills needed in the organization or team), and the techniques define the tools we will use.

Without the base of the pyramid firmly established, it’s unlikely that the rest of the elements will be stable.

The construction of services begins with a quality criterion and is made possible through perseverance.

There is no fantasy.

Do not expect a course, a technique, or a tool to solve all problems. Nor should you expect adopting a methodology to do so.

It’s tempting to resort to fantastic solutions and hope that all our problems (werewolf) will be solved with a single tool (silver bullet). It’s not real. It doesn’t happen. It’s fantasy. Start with the base of the pyramid.
